Uniting For Holistic Health

     Singapore has made a strategic move towards health promotion by the formation of a Healthy Youth Committee (HYCom). The Inter-Agency Committee started its second term on 26 March 2008 to align the health promoting efforts of agencies which have a stake in the health of our youth. HYCom aims to provide a multifaceted collaboration necessary to cultivate in our youth, attitudes to adopt a healthy lifestyle.


      In a monumental collaborative effort, the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) together with the Health Promotion Board (HPB), the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), the Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association (SNDA), the Changi General Hospital (CGH), the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF), the Halogen Foundation, the National Institute of Education (NIE), the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and the People’s Association (PA) have formed HYCom to look into improving and providing holistic health for all students. This encompasses physical, social and mental health.
     

      At the 2007 Trim And Fit (TAF) Award Ceremony, the chairman of HYCom, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Home Affairs, commented that it was “important for school leaders to envision how the Holistic Health Framework (HHF) would manifest in their schools”. He highlighted one of the three key characteristics of a school that has implemented the HHF as having “synergistic collaborations and partnerships for health promotion”. HYCom is the embodiment of such a synergistic collaboration and partnership.


      In a culmination of its efforts for the current two-year term, MOE together with its HYCom partners will be hosting the 2nd ‘Educating For Health’ (EFH) Conference for all school leaders and Heads of Department involved in implementing the Holistic Health Framework in schools, as well as delegates from Ministries of Health and Education in the region.
